Om de STM ATBNG te testen dient een testtrein te beschikken over ATBNG. De testtrein dient een dieseltrein te zijn; de combinatie EVC en STM ATBNG kan alleen getest worden op ATBNG spoor. ATB NG-spoor ligt alleen in Nederland in Limburg en Friesland/Groningen (beide in concessie bij Arriva). Hier ligt niet geëlektrificeerd spoor.
